  29.  
  30. Any time you surf the Internet, you are at risk.
  31. Malicious Java applets and ActiveX controls can be
  32. downloaded to your system without your knowledge
  33. and wreak havoc. WebScanX is designed to provide a
  34. safe computing environment for Internet users. It 
  35. functions as a sentry for your Internet connections.

  39. NEW FEATURES
  40.  
  41. 1. E-mail scanning allows you to scan attachments to
  42.    internet e-mail messages for viruses. WebScanX 
  43.    supports both cc:Mail and MAPI-compliant mailers.
  44.  
  45. 2. Download scanning allows you to scan for viruses in
  46.    files you download from the Internet. Both e-mail
  47.    scanning and download scanning offer the full power
  48.    of McAfee's Hunter scanning technology and have
  49.    the highest detection rates in the industry.

  52.    controls known to cause harm as you surf the

  346. KNOWN ISSUES
  347.  
  348. 1.  This version of WebScanX does not support Win32s. If
  349.     you are using Win32s, you should not attempt to 
  350.     install this version of WebScanX.
  351.  
  352. 2.  If you connect to the Internet through a proxy 
  353.     server, WebScanX's IP address filtering feature will 
  354.     not function because of the way proxy servers handle
  355.     IP communications. Connecting through a "closed" 
  356.     Internet service provider--that is, one that uses a 
  357.     proxy service--also disables this feature. Examples 
  358.     of closed providers include America Online, 
  359.     CompuServe, Prodigy, and the Microsoft Network.
  360.  
  361. 3.  If you have WebScan v2.0 installed on your system, you
  362.     must uninstall WebScan v2.0 before installing WebScanX 
  363.     v3.1.1.
  364.  
  365. 4.  When configuring WebScanX to scan MAPI e-mail, you 
  366.     will not have the option to scan subfolders.
  367.  
  368. 5.  When using WebScanX to scan e-mail sent through 
  369.     Microsoft Exchange, the client and server Exchange 
  370.     components must be the same version number. If the 
  371.     versions are not synchronized, WebScanX will not be 
  372.     properly notified of new messages, and will therefore 
  373.     be unable to scan those messages.
  374.  
  375. 6.  WebScanX enables its Download Scan component by 
  376.     default, not its E-mail Scan component as stated in 
  377.     the WebScanX User's Guide. When you start WebScanX, 
  378.     you should see the Download Scan icon appear in the 
  379.     system tray or, if you use Windows NT 3.51, on the 
  380.     desktop. Use the shortcut menu for this icon to 
  381.     enable other WebScanX program components.
  382.  
  383. 7.  If you use Windows NT 3.51, clicking the Load at 
  384.     Startup switch in the WebScanX Properties dialog box 
  385.     to disable it will not prevent WebScanX from loading 
  386.     at startup. To prevent WebScanX from loading at 
  387.     startup, you must remove it from the Startup program 
  388.     group.
  389.  
  390. 8.  If you use an ISeamless script to install WebScanX on
  391.     machines running Windows 3.1x, Windows NT 3.51, or
  392.     Windows NT 4.0, you may not include an operation that 
  393.     extracts files from a .zip archive in that script.
  394.  
  395. 9.  If using VALIDATE.EXE to validate the WebScanX files,
  396.     the file IMAGEHLP.DLL may not validate correctly. 
  397.     This is because the WebScanX installer adds this file 
  398.     to your system only if the file does not already 
  399.     exist. If the file already exists on your system, the 
  400.     WebScanX installer does not replace it. Thus, after 
  401.     installing WebScanX, your IMAGEHLP.DLL file may not 
  402.     be the same as the one shown in the file PACKING.LST. 
  403.     For more information on validating your files, see 
  404.     the README.1ST file included with this product.
  405.  
  406. 10. This version of WebScanX does not support automatic 
  407.     updating or electronic commerce through asynchronous
  408.     modem.
  409.  
  410. 11. If you use Windows NT 3.51, selecting the WebScanX 
  411.     Status dialog box may cause system instability.
  412.

  419. shortly after its release in English. You may download

  455. * BASIC SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS *
  456.  
  457. For Windows 95 and Windows NT:
  458.  
  459.   -  486 with at least 8MB of memory
  460.   -  7MB of free hard disk space
  461.  
  462. For Windows 3.1x:
  463.  
  464.   -  CPU capable of running Windows 3.1x
  465.   -  At least 6MB of memory
  466.   -  4MB of free hard disk space  
  467.  
  468.  
  469. * INSTALLING WEBSCANX *
  470.  
  471. 1. Take one of the following Steps:
  472.  
  473.    - If you are installing from compact disc,
  474.      insert the CD-ROM. Click Install WebScanX. 
  475.  
  476.    - If you are installing from downloaded files, type:
  477.      
  478.        x:\path\setup.exe (where x:\path is the location 
  479.        of the decompressed files).  Click OK.
  480.  
  481.    Response: The Welcome screen appears. Click
  482.    Next to continue.
  483.  
  484. 2. Follow the on-screen installation instructions to
  485.    complete WebScanX installation.
  486.  
  487.  
  488. * SILENT INSTALLATION * 
  489.  
  490. Network Administrators can perform a "silent" 
  491. installation of WebScanX that requires minimal user 
  492. interaction and uses settings they specify. Follow 
  493. these steps:
  494.  
  495. 1.  Check in the Windows directory to ensure that a file 
  496.     named SETUP.ISS does not already exist. If it does, 
  497.     rename it, back it up, or delete it.
  498.  
  499. 2.  Run SETUP.EXE with the -r switch, 
  500.     (i.e., SETUP.EXE -r).
  501.  
  502. 3.  Select the components that you want to install 
  503.     during the silent installation. The installer 
  504.     records all responses.
  505.  
  506. 4.  Finish the installation, then locate the file 
  507.     SETUP.ISS in the Windows directory.
  508.  
  509. 5.  Open the file using any ASCII editor (e.g., 
  510.     NOTEPAD.EXE) and delete the section titled 
  511.     [APPLICATION].
  512.  
  513. 6.  Locate the section [SdSetupType-0] in the 
  514.     SETUP.ISS file and go to the line:
  515.  
  516.         Result=x
  517.  
  518.         where x is equal to
  519.         301 (Typical installation)
  520.         302 (Compact installation)
  521.         303 (Custom installation)
  522.  
  523. 7.  Add 100 to the above value, so that the Result 
  524.     variable equals 401. Modifying this file allows 
  525.     the installation to copy WebScanX files to the 
  526.     drive where the operating system resides, 
  527.     instead of defaulting to the C: drive.
  528.  
  529. 8.  Copy SETUP.ISS from the Windows directory to the 
  530.     directory that contains the files you installed on 
  531.     your own computer.
  532.  
  533. 9.  At this point you should use your own distribution
  534.     method to install WebScanX on end-user machines.
  535.  
  536. 10. When you have access to the machine on which you 
  537.     want to install WebScanX, run SETUP.EXE with the 
  538.     -s switch (i.e., SETUP.EXE -s).
  539.  
  540.     NOTE: If you do not specify a "recorded" answer 
  541.     for all dialog boxes during the initial installation,
  542.     the silent installation will fail. Also, the file 
  543.     used for the silent installation, SETUP.ISS, may not 
  544.     work properly across different operating systems. For
  545.     example, if you edit the SETUP.ISS file to perform a 
  546.     silent install on machines running Windows 95, that 
  547.     file may not work properly on machines running 
  548.     Windows NT.

  611. * UNINSTALLING WEBSCANX *
  612.  
  613. Before uninstalling WebScanX, close all other
  614. applications. Failure to close applications before
  615. uninstalling could cause a General Protection Fault.
  616.

  618. AUTOMATICALLY UNINSTALLING WEBSCANX:
  619.  
  620. Follow these steps:
  621.   
  622.   1.  Click Start Menu
  623.   2.  Select Programs
  624.   3.  Select McAfee WebScanX
  625.   4.  Select Uninstall
  626.  
  627.   Several windows appear in which the uninstall 
  628.   utility asks you if you are sure you want to 
  629.   uninstall WebScanX. Continue to click Yes for each 
  630.   window until the Uninstall WebScanX screen appears.
  631.   A final summary screen will appear indicating which 
  632.   program files are being removed. After all the 
  633.   program files have been removed, click OK and 
  634.   restart your computer. You have successfully 
  635.   uninstalled WebScanX.
  636.  
  637.   WARNING: Do not stop the uninstall procedure once it
  638.   begins. If the uninstall procedure is interrupted,
  639.   you must remove all WebScanX files yourself.
  640.

  642. MANUALLY UNINSTALLING THE PRODUCT:    
  643.  
  644.   Make sure WebScanX is not running, then delete the
  645.   McAfee WebScanX directory.
  646.  
  647.   1.  Click Start and select Run.
  648.   2.  Type REGEDIT, then click OK.
  649.   3.  Delete the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\
  650.       McAfee\WebScanX folder.
  651.   4.  Delete WebScanX from the Microsoft\Windows\
  652.       Current Version\RunServices folder.
  653.   5.  Close the Registry Editor Window.
  654.   6.  Remove the WebScanX program group from the
  655.       Start menu.
  656.       NOTE: Do not remove the IMAGEHLP.DLL file from
  657.       your system. It may be used by other programs.
  658.   7.  Restart your computer.

  799.     might cause your computer to run slowly during a scan,

  801.     pending in your Inbox. To increase scan efficiency, 
  802.     delete messages you do not need from your cc:Mail Inbox 
  803.     and trash folder.

  805. Q:  How does WebScanX handle multiple infections in a 
  806.     compressed file?

  808. A:  Because WebScanX sees a compressed file as one file,
  809.     it can only act on the compressed file as a whole.
